NAXOS VILLAGES CHALKI

CHALKI
Chalki (or Chalkio among locals) is the largest village is center of the Tragea region (the main area for the olive trees and the biggest cultivation of the Cyclades). It was the old capital of Naxos. Here there are some well preserved classical houses, a church and a byzanthinisches museum. The museum is opened only for announced tourist routes. In addition there are two well received apartment towers in Chalkio. Its neo-classical houses reveal the reach of its climax.

Being worth a visit is Panagia the Drossiani. The church is about 2 km from Chalkio. It probably originates from that 6. Century and is extremely interesting built. The origin of the church is a small church with many side chapels. A further point of interest is northwest the Apano Kastro, a pencil sharpener rock cone from Chalkio. At the summit a little well received ruins of a fortress from that are to 13. Century. The area around Chalkio is also suitable for bird watching.
