Naxos in TRIMED project about Mediterranean diet
11 January 2005

Naxos is participating in the TRIMED project in the framework of the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union, with the participation of other Mediterranean islands such as Majorca, Malta, Corsica, Cyprus and Sicily.

The main objective of this initiative is to present the culture of the so-called Mediterranean trinity of bread, wine and oil in the pre-industrial period through the remains of material, architectural and intangible heritage, to nurture the training of professional restaurateurs in the use and application of traditional techniques and materials, and to promote the said products in European gastronomy. The project is planned to come to an end in September 2007.

Kite Cross Tour July 1-2-3 NAXOS
1 July 2005

Mikri vigla Watersports Naxos and Corona Extra are putting its energies into Kiteboarding. However, as it is anxious to channel these efforts into promoting, above all, the sport and a certain lifestyle, the competition that is being organised aims to be unlike anything that you’ve seen before. After all, Kite Cross is very much a spectator sport, whose fun image belies the skill of the boarders who need to be able to juggle speed, an obstacle course, free style, careful positioning and race planning. This will therefore be the main focus of the event. Although Kite Cross may be the main ingredient, we will also spice up the event with best trick, down wind, etc. In fact, what we want to do is give everyone the possibility of participating on an equal footing. Professionals, amateurs, women and men will come up against something totally new and different, in a spirit of emulation and discovery that the Kite Cross Tour sets out to promote. The challenge is twofold: -To win the men’s/women’s champion titles. -To take home the prize money of 10,000 US$, shared out and awarded at the end of the last heat of the Corona Kite Cross Tour ’05. Both on the water and the beach, all those who take up our invitation can look forward to one big party

Plaka Beach among the top 10 of Europe
11 June 2005

In a recent article published in the UK Joanna Symons includes Plaka beach among the top 10 beaches of Europe. According to Mrs Symons:

There is something delightfully alternative about Plaka Beach on the Cycladic island of Naxos. A golden stretch of several miles, dotted with loungers and overshadowed by umbrellas, it has a relaxed attitude to clothing.

The farther south you wander along it, the more flesh goes on display, starting with full swimming gear at the northern end and finishing with not very much at all half a mile along.

The water is clear and blue, a mini market sells cold drinks and snacks -- and it's the closest you'll get to Goa in the Med.

Tonia Buxton - My Greek Kitchen
September 17, 2006

Tonia Buxton is on Naxos in Greece, famed for its rugged mountains, fertile valleys and abundant produce, including olives, grapes, wine, figs, citrus and kitron, a tangy liqueur. And when visitors are done eating and drinking, there are 500 Byzantine churches and monasteries to admire.

Basing herself at a local taverna, Tonia collects vine leaves for dolmades - it's a fairly mechanical process, which is why the village women gather for a gossip while they roll and fold hundreds of these delicacies for weddings and feast days.

Tonia's secret ingredient is cinnamon, which locals buy in bundles the length of garden stakes and stick in their wardrobes to ward off moths. She also visits a beautiful wood-fired kitron distillery and a local pottery, before making a sticky fig and walnut dessert.

Naxos among Top 10 islands Europe
28 March, 2013

A spot of white in the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, the island of Naxos is a unique blend of ancient ruins and beach culture. The largest of the Cycladic Islands, Naxos is the childhood home of none other than Zeus, king of the gods. Upon arrival in Naxos, hike over a causeway to Palatia, where the Portara, a stone gateway to an ancient temple that no longer exists, stands alone, the symbol of the island. At sunset, the views of the island, and the sea beyond, are breathtaking.
